In the aftermath of the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, we try to make sense of what has happened.
There are side effects and long-term biological changes that can be caused by SSRI (Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitor) and other anti-depressant medications, which psychiatrists rarely discuss, even though they are now printed in the medication inserts.
1. A significant percentage of people taking SSRIs and other anti-depressants experience psychotic, suicidal, violent, or homicidal thoughts, many of whom did not experience these thoughts before taking the drugs.
2. Some people using these anti-depressants experience altered mental states, similar to dreaming or nightmares, sometimes for extended periods.
3. There have been many actual suicides and homicides linked to these anti-depressants. Some researchers of teen homicides and school massacres have also noted that in a large percentage of these cases the perpetrators and ringleaders were taking SSRI anti-depressants. 4. Over time, since SSRIs increase the concentration of serotonin in the synapse (the connection between brain cells), the brain compensates by producing less serotonin and decreasing the number of serotonin receptors, creating a pathological state as well as dependency on the drugs.
It is time that we confront the pharmaceutical industry and stop the overmedication of these drugs. Naturopathic substitutes such as 5-HTP, pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules and St. John's Wort must be used instead. Many other similar substances are known by native peoples and naturopathic practitioners all over the world, but have not seen widespread use because they do not provide the kind of profit opportunities that the pharmaceutical medications do.
